Sony offers a virtual Chernobyl tour

Japanese company Sony will release a PlayStation VR helmet application, in which users are offered a journey through the exclusion zone.

Chernobyl VR Project is based on movies and photos, panoramas and 3D places scanning. The data was collected in cooperation with a Polish video game developer The Farm 51. As a result, we got a visual interactive tour of Chernobyl and Pripyat.

The tour shows users not just the well-known locations, such as Duga station, the amusement park, the swimming pool. Developers also captured school № 3, polyclinic, dwellings and the scrap yard with cars, used in rescue operations. In some places, the 1986 shots were put in, for re-enactment of the events of that time.

The exclusion zone is being gradually destroyed, so this captured footage and the application will be a kind of historical document in the future. Chernobyl VR Project will be available on PS VR in early 2018.
