Use of augmented reality in education


AR technology is a godsend for education. The process of learning something new always inheres fascination. And if this process is complemented with participation effect, it allows you to learn a lot more and understand the material much better.

Mission of augmented reality is to "enrich" physical objects, and it can be applied for a huge variety of such objects. It was presented at Frankfurt Book Fair in 2008. Atlas was created using Unifeye platform and "Big World Atlas" and today it is available only in German, but the concept is very easy to understand and it is possible to implement it another language.

AR technology also helped to enrich many other historical sites, that include Ming Dynasty Summer Palace (located in the suburbs of Beijing), as well as a barn, where the Wright brothers built their first aircraft.

AR technologies and languages

Today, there are AR applications designed to help both children and adults in learning foreign languages. We are talking about game called Put a Spell developed by Ogmento especially for iPhone, and Google Goggles or Word Lens that make it possible to read inscriptions in foreign language using the phone with application installed.

AR technology and kinaesthetics

As far as technology involves integration with real world, it can be used for physical skills training.

Specialists of ETH Zurich laboratory used touch interface to combine real and virtual objects and teach surgeons "manipulatory" skills. This invention can be very useful for training procedures that are associated with high risk. Attempts to use augmented reality were also carried out in headquarters of Marine Corps of United States armed forces. Technology is used to train engineers who are engaged in repair work in the field.

Experts of Columbia University Computer Graphics with the support of UI Laboratory Steve Feiner developed a project scenario. It animates engine parts with virtual images; all this is completed with repair manual. Thus, the user can see it all through head-mounted display that looks like glasses. Technology is already tested by Marines, and it turned out that its efficiency is much higher than that of electronic textbooks.
